The news of Japan’s tragedy today comes at the beginning of the Lenten season. As we pray for the survivors, it is imperative that we not turn immediately back to our busy little lives and push this enormous catastrophe to the back of our minds. Rather, this is an all too fitting, if unfortunate, start to this season of repentance and self-denial. It paints the picture in living color that we are in a sinful, fallen, dead world, and it reminds us why we pray for the swift return of our Lord and Savior.
As you contemplate the depths of your own sin, and the abhorrence of life in this current plane during this Lenten season, hold the people of Japan up in prayer. Let this tragedy impress upon you the depths of woe this world has for us, and the greatness of He who ransomed us from it.
Come, Lord Jesus!
