Given how in AU2 we talked about the Deity of Christ in the synoptic Gospels, but didn’t really deal with the Gospel of John but for in passing, I thought we should give ol’ John the props He deserves in a special delivery. I am posting a link to what has to be the most scholarly and thorough paper on the implications of Jesus’ “I Am” statements in the Gospel of John that I have ever seen. Doesn’t mean there’s not better out there, but I have yet to cross paths with it if so (and if you know of one, please tell me!). And it is no wonder to me that this paper is so incredibly powerful and comprehensive, since it was written by a former Unitarian.
Due warning: this paper is lengthy if you are used to reading 1000 word magazine articles and bite-sized blog posts. However, it is not overwhelming (it comes in at just under 70 pages, including the bibliography), and is certainly written in a very readable, accessible-to-the-layman manner. I recommend you take it section by section to allow it to sink in, and certainly don’t try to digest it all in one sitting! Better still, print it off and grab a highlighter – you’ll need it.
So without further ado, I give you this dissertation on John’s masterpiece. Enjoy!
